Remootio Keypad and Card Reader Guide

1. Introduction

Remootio Pro supports wiring up to two keypads and/or card readers that support the Wiegand protocol. We recommend using a keypad and card reader explicitly sold by or recommended by Remootio such as the RMT-210-KD and RMT-310-C (for user guides see below).

Remootio does not guarantee that the Remootio Pro unit will work with any arbitrary Wiegand keypad or card reader out of the box, due to the potential manufacturer-specific differences in protocol implementation.

2. Configure your Wiegand accessory

It is important to make sure the Wiegand device is in "Wiegand reader" mode. It's recommended to set your master code on the readers to a secret random value that only you know (do not leave it at the default value)

2.1 RMT-210-C

RMT-210-C is a card reader recommended by Remootio. It is capable of reading 125kHz EM cards. It comes in Wiegand reader mode by default, and does not have any master code configuration, so you do not have to do anything.

2.2 RMT-210-KD

RMT-210-KD is a keypad and card reader recommended by Remootio. It is capable of reading 125kHz EM cards and allowing the use of PIN codes as well.

It is highly recommended to change your Master code to a unique value, so that the keypad's configuration cannot be changed by others. Access control of the PIN codes and opening the door always happens on the Remootio Pro, so being able to guess the Master Code of the reader itself does not enable anyone to open the door. Regardless, it is still highly recommended to choose a unique value for the master code.

2.2.1 Reconfigure the master code:

  • Enter programming mode: * <Master code> #
    • With the default master code it is *123456#
    • After pressing * the LED will flash in red and when you entered the master code + # it will beep and the LED will turn green momentarily. You are now in programming mode, and the LED will continue to flash in red.
  • Set new master code: 0 (New Master Code) # (New Master Code repeated) #
    • Example: Set 534234 as new master code: 0534234#534234#
    • Master code must be 6 digits
  • Exit programming mode with *

2.2.2 Configure Wiegand reader mode

The device is already pre-configured to be in Wiegand reader mode, but if it is not the case (the keypad doesn't work properly with Remootio Pro) you can always re-configure it to Wiegand reader mode.

  • Enter programming mode: * <Master code> #
  • Then enter 7 8 #
  • Exit programming mode with *

2.3 Third party keypad / card reader

For other keypads or card readers please refer to the user manual of the individual wiegand device to set it into reader mode.

At the moment the Remootio Pro supports the following Wiegand formats (new formats may be added with upcoming software updates):

  • 4-8 bit: PIN codes
  • 24,26,32,34bit: RF card IDs

3. Connecting the accessories to Remootio Pro

The terminals for connecting wiegand accessories are:

24: 12V
24: GND
25: Wiegand_2_D0 (for secondary wiegand device)
26: Wiegand_2 D1 (for secondary wiegand device)
27: Wiegand_1 D0 (for primary wiegand device)
28: Wiegand_1 D1 (for primary wiegand device)
29: Wiegand Buzzer control
30: Wiegand LED control

Remootio Pro supports a primary Wiegand device, and a secondary Wiegand device (2 in total). You need to wire the D0 and D1 wires of the keypad / card reader into the D0 and D1 terminals of Wiegand_1 or Wiegand_2 on the Remootio Pro. If you only have one keypad/card reader, you have to wire it into Wiegand_1 D0 and Wiegand_1 D1.

The Buzzer and LED control signals are shared between the two wiegand devices, which means both will beep and have LED feedback if either of them were used to successfully operate the gate / unlock the door.

It is important to connect the GND signal to the Wiegand device's GND terminal.

The 12V signal may be used to power the Wiegand accessories, but only as long as it does not cause interference and everything works properly. Remootio strongly recommends using a separate 12V power supply for the wiegand accessories.

The image above how to connect a primary wiegand keypad / card reader to the Remootio Pro unit. The color of the wires coming from the keypad / card reader in the image are:
  • Green: D0
  • White: D1
  • Yellow: Buzzer control
  • Brown: LED control

The image above shows how to connect two Wiegand devices to the Remootio Pro unit. Please note that the D0 (green) and D1 (white) wires of each keypad go into separate D0 and D1 inputs on the Remootio Pro. In the image above both keypads are powered from the Remootio Pro device, please keep in mind that Remootio strongly recommends to use an external 12V power supply for the wiegand devices instead.

4. Enabling the Wiegand accessories in the app

You need to be an administrator user for the given Remootio Pro device.

Go to the card of your device, click the settings icon in the bottom right corder, and scroll down until you see "Keypad/Card reader" and tap on it

On this screen you will see the options to enable the Wiegand interfaces:
If you have connected only a primary Wiegand device to terminals Wiegand_1 D0 and Wiegand_1 D1, then click Enable wiegand interface
If you have also connected a secondary Wiegand device to Wiegand_2 D0 and Wiegand_2 D1 then also click Enable second wiegand interface
The configuration text below each activated interface ("Operate default output: ...." in the picture) lets you choose which relay output of the Remootio Pro a given keypad will operate. It's recommended to keep the default values unless you want to operate two different doors with the two different keypads.
Turning on Test mode (will only be active for 120 seconds, or until you turn it off) lets you verify the wire connections between Remootio Pro and the keypad.  In this mode the Remootio app will always show you the last key press / card ID read registered by the keypad / card reader.
If you do not see corresponding data displayed in test mode when you press buttons on the keypad / read card ids, your wired connection is most likely wrong. The two most common mistakes are:
  1. Mistake: When only using one wiegand accessory, wiring it into Wiegand_2 D0 and Wiegand2_D1 as opposed to Wiegand_1 D0 and Wiegand_1 D1 on the Remootio Pro
  2. Mixing up the D0 and D1 wires. D0 is usually green color while D1 is usually white

The two settings below lets you control whether admin users will be able to see the exact PIN code values and RF card ID values of other users, or if they will only be able to see ******** if a value is set.

5. Users and PIN codes / RF card IDs

After you have set up your keypad / card reader accessories, you can start assigning PIN codes and RF card IDs to individual users.

The picture below shows a user (Josh), who cannot enter via PIN code or RF card yet

After clicking on the pencil icon in the Pin code row you can enter a PIN manually, or you can press the ? random box to generate a random PIN code. PIN codes are 4-8 digit long.

After adding a PIN code you will see the PIN code or ***** for the given user. (If the setting to hide the pin codes from the Keypad settings screen is turned on you will see ***** like in the picture below)

When a PIN is cofigured pressing the round keypad icon in the left will suspend the PIN code. While suspended the user will not be able to enter using their PIN code (it essentially disables their pin code without deleting the code itself). It can be reactivated by pressing the same icon.

For RF card IDs you can either enter the card ID manually, or select scan new card ID. If you select scan new card ID, the Remootio Pro enters "card pairing mode", the card readers connected to the Remootio Pro will beep and flash until you scan a valid RF card. After scanning the card's ID will be registered to the given user.

RF card ids can also be suspended

5. Special keys using PIN codes

If you create a user that has maximum 1 uses (Usage count) and has a unique PIN code, you essentially created a one-time use PIN code that you can give to a delivery driver or similar. You can also set the setting "Key will be deleted automatically after reaching max usage count", which would automatically delete the user after the PIN has been used

The app supports creating such a user with a click of a button. After pressing Create new on the users page click show more options and select one-time use PIN code. This creates a user with a random pin code and one uses only. This user will be automatically deleted after their PIN code was used up.
